Located in downtown Washington, we are a renewing urban
parish whose vitality springs from our diversity. We represent
a wide range of spiritual practices, economic resources,
and social thought. We reside not only in the city, but
in communities throughout the Washington Metropolitan area.
We are made up of different ages, ethnic origins, and lifestyles.
Our unity is our common commitment to Jesus Christ and the
ministry to which we are called.
We stand upon a goodly heritage. Founded in 1842 on the
Feast of the Epiphany, our church was built in a quiet,
residential neighborhood. From humble beginnings, Epiphany
grew to be one of the largest and most influential parishes
in the nation. Seven of our clergy became bishops and three
persons affiliated with our parish became national Episcopal
Church leaders. Epiphany has been at the heart of many social
improvement and reform movements over the years.
In 1895, the Episcopal Diocese of Maryland, meeting in
our church, decided to create the new Diocese of Washington
of which Epiphany is a part today. We are members of the
Episcopal Church in the United States and in turn part of
the worldwide Anglican Communion. Our neighborhood has changed
dramatically over the past 160 years, but our mission today
remains steadfast - to journey in faith together
and to reveal the presence of Christ in the world.
Parish Mission Statement
We at Epiphany are called by God
to journey in faith together,
and to reveal the presence of Christ in the world,
by sustaining a community
in
which all are welcome,
by celebrating liturgy
that
nurtures us and sends us forth,
and by caring courageously
for
our neighbors and ourselves.
Parish Stewardship Statement
God offers us a life of abundance,
and calls us to celebrate
our lives
and unique capabilities
as gifts.
We believe that God wants us to use these gifts,
not only for ourselves, but for all Creation.
In a world broken by unshared bread,
God invites us to a table
with room enough and bread enough for all.
We accept God’s invitation,
and we bring with joy our gifts to God’s
table.

The Episcopal Church
The Episcopal Church, or ECUSA, is part of the Anglican
Communion, organized in the United States in 1789 as an
independent daughter of the Church of England. It is rooted
in the Holy Catholic Church, profoundly influenced by the
religious Reformation of the 16th century. Episcopal theology
depends on scripture, tradition, and reason, in perpetual
dialogue with one another. This is a liturgical church,
guided in worship by The Book of Common Prayer. (From “Peek
Through the Window of the Episcopal Church”, for more

The Anglican Communion
The Anglican Communion is a world-wide organization of
Anglican Churches which includes the Episcopal Church. There
is no single "Anglican Church"; it is better to
speak of the Anglican Communion, which consists of national
churches in communion with the Church of England. Most share
the dogma and doctrine of the Church of England.
