Clergy Transition Update

Dear brothers and sisters in Christ,

We’re very happy to announce that we have called the Rev’d Geoffrey Hoare to be the next interim rector of our church. Rev’d Hoare comes to us from All Saints’ Episcopal Church in Atlanta, where he has served as rector since 1998.

A native of England, Geoffrey came to America as a Morehead Scholar at the University of North Carolina in 1976. After taking an additional degree from Cambridge University, where he was a member of Magdalene College, he returned to the United States and to the Yale University Divinity School together with its Episcopal component, the Berkeley Divinity School.

Geoffrey was ordained Deacon and Priest in the Diocese of North Carolina. He served at Christ Church in Raleigh (1982-1987), and as Rector of St. Paul’s Church Alexandria (1988-1998). During those years he also served as adjunct faculty at Virginia Theological Seminary. He currently serves as a Trustee of the Berkeley Divinity School at Yale and is a member of the Compass Rose Society of the Anglican Communion. Additionally, he has served as an instructor in the contextual education program of the Candler School of Theology at Emory University.

Throughout his career Geoffrey has actively engaged in critical issues including domestic violence, AIDS, child abuse, and homelessness. He served as director of Visions, Inc., an organization devoted to combating modern racism and other relationships with inherent differentials of power, and currently serves on their Advisory Board. Among All Saints’ many outreach ministries is Covenant Community, a life transformation residence and halfway house for homeless men recovering from substance abuse.

Geoffrey will be with us for the next 4 to 6 months until we call a permanent rector. His ministry at Epiphany will begin on September 1st. Despite this time of change, many constants will continue. Our interim associate rector Catriona Laing will continue to serve in her various capacities. We’ll rely on supply clergy during the month of August, many of whom will be familiar faces. Please do call or email the office if you are in need of pastoral care at any time. Thank you for your continued patience.

Elizabeth will be with us through the end of this week. We encourage you to take this time to say goodbye if you haven’t yet.

If you have any questions about the process, please feel free to contact either of us. Rasheen can be reached at 240-274-2921, and Bea can be reached at 703-795-8687.

To the Church of the Epiphany,

I cannot tell you how lucky you are to have Geoffrey! We all miss him dearly at All Saints in Atlanta already. He’s inspiring, funny, caring and, most of all, he is (and will be) “all-in” for whatever time you have with him.

So do the best you can to hang on to him as long as you possibly can. Simply put, there’s nobody like Goeffrey.

    God Bless,

    Kevin Mylod

To our brothers and sisters in Christ at Church of the Epiphany: We at All Saints were immeasurably blessed for 18 years to have Geoffrey as our rector. His extraordinary ministry at our parish will be felt for many years to come. You are now likewise blessed to have Geoffrey as your interim rector. Congratulations! God’s works are wonderful indeed. Thanks be to Him.
