The Episcopal Church says Yes to Marriage Equality

On Wednesday July 1 The Episcopal Church said yes to sacramental marriage for same-sex couples when the House of Deputies voted to approve two resolutions changing the canons on marriage and approving two marriage liturgies for trial use. The House of Bishops passed these resolutions on June 29.

Resolution A054 created two trial liturgies, including a gender-neutral version of the current Book of Common Prayer marriage service. Resolution A036 amends the canons on marriage.

Susan Russell, a long time advocate for LGBT people in The Episcopal Church has published a response describing Wednesday’s action as “an exemplary illustration of the hard, faithful work of a church refusing to let the perfect be the enemy of the good as it strives to become a more expansive and inclusive church.”

Additional coverage of Wednesday’s vote is available from The Episcopal News Service and The Washington Post.
